Rounded Shadow: A Harmonious Blend of Eastern Zen and Western Elegance

Yeh and Chiao's Award-Winning Residence Marries Cultures Through Design

In the lush embrace of a hillside, the "Rounded Shadow" residence emerges as a testament to the fusion of Eastern and Western design philosophies. Crafted by the visionary duo Teng-Fa Yeh and Li-Yu Chiao, this abode is a celebration of cultural harmony and aesthetic innovation.

At the heart of "Rounded Shadow" lies the principle of borrowing scenery, an Oriental technique that dissolves the barriers between the indoors and the lush outdoors. The design team's strategic use of open plans and expansive windows creates a seamless visual flow, allowing nature to become an integral part of the living experience. The residence's unique geometry and framing techniques further enhance the sense of space, offering layered vistas that captivate and inspire.

The concept of Zen, central to Eastern culture, resonates throughout the home in the form of wooden grilles and minimalist aesthetics. These elements not only embody tranquility but also serve as a canvas for the interplay of light and shadow, fostering a serene environment that echoes the harmony between nature and interior spaces. The designers' commitment to eco-friendly materials such as tatami mats and engineered hardwood flooring reinforces the residence's symbiotic relationship with its environment.

Technical prowess is evident in the selection of materials that define "Rounded Shadow." The public areas boast a palette that mirrors the external greenery, with stone and wood textures blending effortlessly into the surroundings. In contrast, the private quarters cater to individual preferences, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of the design. The residence spans four floors, each thoughtfully planned to maximize the interplay between the outdoor courtyard and the internal circulation.

The design team's meticulous approach extends to the functionality of the space. Concealed storage solutions and circular partitions adorned with Oriental motifs ensure practicality without compromising the aesthetic. The hot spring area, a sanctuary for relaxation, allows residents to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature, further blurring the lines between the built and natural environments.

Confronted with the challenge of blending diverse cultural elements, Yeh and Chiao have masterfully navigated the complexities of Eastern and Western design languages. The result is a residence that not only stands as a beacon of design innovation but also serves as a comfortable and stylish haven for its inhabitants. The "Rounded Shadow" is a testament to the designers' ability to create a space that is both a work of art and a functional home.

With its completion in December 2022, the "Rounded Shadow" has already garnered international recognition, securing a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024. This accolade is a tribute to the project's exceptional design quality and its embodiment of cross-cultural aesthetics, setting a new benchmark for residential design.
